CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Bill

“Evans!”

I look up from my computer where my eyes have been glued since I walked in, scrolling down some five thousand odd profiles. A needle in a haystack, but at least something concrete to work on.

The moment I got to my desk, I left a message for Jasper Greene when his phone went to voicemail. All Samantha’s electronics were handed over to the FBI for Greene to examine. He should have access to her social media accounts.

Next, I pulled up the public community group and started scanning for Caitlyn.

We never found her cell phone, and her family told us she didn’t own a laptop. At their direction, we found a Twitter account for her, but nothing on Facebook. That doesn’t mean she didn’t have one, she could’ve downloaded the app on her phone.

It’s feasible someone recommended the community group as a resource for her, but her name doesn’t bring up any hits. I can see how she may have used a fake name, just like Samantha did.

Which is why I’ve been checking profile pictures and names. Both to see if I can find anyone who looks like Caitlyn or a profile that sounds like it might be her. If I can confirm she’s in this group, it would be the first connection we have between our victims.

“You’ve got a visitor,” Mike Bolter announces, wiggling his eyebrows.

I follow him to the lobby where Vic is waiting by the desk, looking very uncomfortable.

“Everything all right, honey?”

Her face flushes as she looks sideways at Bolter, who is resuming his position behind the front desk.

“You…uh…left your phone.”

She holds it up and my hand automatically goes to my pants where I usually keep it. My pocket is empty. I hadn’t even realized it was missing.

“Where’d you find it?” I ask, taking it from her hand.

She bulges her eyes at me and with a slight jerk of her head indicates Bolter behind her. Mike has his arms crossed across his chest and is observing us with interest.

“Bedroom,” she whispers, leaning close.

Not quietly enough for our desk sergeant apparently, who quickly masks his bark of laughter with a cough and turns his back, busying himself with the copier.

I don’t feel obliged to announce anything—it’s nobody’s business Vic and I are seeing each other—but I also don’t give a rat’s ass if someone finds out. I’m being ragged on the subject already. Mainly by my partner, who just now walks in the door.

“Morning all. Hey, Vic, did Evans forget his lunch?” Jay jokes.

“Actually, it was his phone. She found it in the bedroom,” Bolter volunteers helpfully.

I make a concerted effort not to react. Usually silence is the quickest way for the ribbing to stop. The bullpen can be as bad as a boys’ locker room, which means I’ve had years of experience.

“Oh, for Pete’s sake,” Vic bursts out, throwing her hands up. “I don’t have time for this.”

Then she turns on her heel and heads for the exit, adding, “Oh, and you may want to give your daughter a call,” before she disappears through the door.
